Let's Celebrate Carnival!

Carnival In My Home Town

Carnival usually takes place in February; it starts on Sunday an lasts for three more days -- Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, when we celebrate the burial of the sardine and the celebration finishes, except for next weekend, known as the Weekend of the Piñata.

In Santa Cruz de Mudela, the costumes often tell about the most recent news or the most fashionable fiction characters -- last year for example: “The Old Woman Behind the Curtains”.

There are some costumes smarter than others.

Carnival In Santa Cruz de Mudela

In my home town, we live Carnival very intensely. On Sunday, Carnival starts with a parade where children and older dress up. During all day people participate in the street party and go dancing to the pubs. It’s funny.

The party continues on Monday and Thursday too.

On Ash Wednesday, we celebrate the “entierro de la sardina”. People dress up with dark clothes and they cry because the sardine is going to die by fire.

Then the next weekend, Carnival is officially over with masks and costumes contests, and there’s an orchestra on the square so you can dance until your body endures.

Carnival In My Home Town

In my home town, Carnival is a very popular traditional festival, there are groups of people who wear costumes and represent different characters -- historical, popular, animals, etc.

On Sunday there is a Carnival parade with all these groups. Then, the party moves to the bars and pubs, where people dance and enjoy these days.

Ash Wednesday marks the burial of the sardine.
